Tool Objectives:
- Provide critical information about dual language learners and the intersection of language learning and ability.
- Provide strategies to work with students and families who exist in the intersection of language learning and are differently abled.
- Provide opportunities for teachers to critically examine and reflect on their own practices compared to the best practices provided in this tool.
Tool Description:
This tool provides educators with an overview of the challenges and concerns facing students who are both dual language learners and differently abled. The tool is based on data driven research and provides both visual graphics that can be used in isolation or together to assist teachers in providing high quality instruction to students who are DLL with and without disabilities. The tool concludes with reflective questions that create an opportunity for teachers to examine their own practices and use data to drive instructional improvement.
Tool Procedures:
- Assemble a small group or learning community of teachers who are interested in this topic.
- Read the three infographics.
- Use the learning community structure to discuss each graphic, using the provided questions for reflection.
- Determine what common goals you can set for your learning community.
- Identify individual goals you will implement into your practice as a classroom teacher or administrator.
- Determine if there are any data sources or avenues that need further exploration based on the specific population of students who attend your school.
