Student Fishbowl Tool

Tool Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of topic specified by the facilitators of this activity (which may change according to application of the strategy).
  2. Evaluate arguments and points made by speakers during the course of the activity.
  3. Engage in discussion about specified topics and make well reasoned and rational argument for or against topics.
  4. Increase awareness of the multiple facets of the topic identified for the fishbowl.

Tool Description:

This activity is designed as an active listening activity by certain participants and a discussion activity for others.  The purpose of the activity is to allow students or participants to have the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics preselected by teachers/facilitators.  This activity is just as much about listening and reflecting as it is about discussing.  Ensure the discussion is allowed to continue for at least 30 minutes.  You may wish to customize the questions in this activity to fit the needs of your fishbowl session.

Tool Procedures:

  1. Read the protocol linked to this template.
  2. Read the facilitator notes associated with this activity.
  3. Introduce the activity to students and set ground rules for interaction.
  4. Conduct the activity following protocol outlined in this activity.
  5. Ensure all fishbowl members are allowed to talk and that all observers know that they cannot respond.
  6. End this activity with a dialogue and reflect on the learning.
