Tool Objectives:

1. Develop cultural awareness among participants.
2. Investigate and appreciate a variety of cultures and traditions.

Tool Description:

This tool was developed to be used during the American holiday of Thanksgiving to assist and promote cultural awareness and competence in a variety of realms.  This project is aligned to Common Core Standards.  Students will investigate 14 ways of expressing gratitude using the materials provided in this tool, students will then unpack their own understandings of their culture and the impact it has on their behaviors.

Tool Procedures:

1. Students will first complete the crossword puzzle included in the materials section of this link.
2. Students will be paired with another student or small group and assigned a region of the globe.
3. Students will investigate a festival or holiday from that region centered around giving thanks.
4. Students will create a short presentation that answers specific questions outlined in the materials for this tool.
5. Students will: discuss to unpack their knowledge.
6. Students will write and share a short reflection on the activity.
